　　Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

　　Your university is planning to require all first-year students to take a class in which they would learn how to use the resources available at the university library and apply those skills in writing a long research paper. Do you think this is a good idea?

　　No, I don’t really think that’s a good idea. The first reason is it’s more important for first-year students to take classes related to their major or interesting electives rather than a class that teaches them how to use library resources. This is because other classes are higher on students’ priority list to graduate or can open the door to new interests and passions. In addition, library skills can be taught in a series of workshops or a short-term training program instead of a semester-long course. The skills are not overly complicated or comprehensive, so it’s entirely possible to learn them in a short period of time.
